Laparoscopic Surgery
Laparoscopic surgery is ‘keyhole’ or ‘minimally invasive’ surgery. It involves surgery through one or more very small skin incisions, rather than long incision. Through these small incisions, ports are placed to pass a telescope and instruments. The advantage of laparoscopic procedures are less pain and rapid post operative recovery compared to open surgicalprocedures. Laparoscopic procedures are as safe and effective as open surgery..

At the beginning of the procedure, the abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide gas to provide a working and viewing space for the surgeon. Most intestinal surgeries can be performed using the laparoscopic technique. These include surgery for Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, cancer, rectal prolapse and severe constipation. Laparoscopic surgery is as safe as traditional open surgery. Compared to traditional open surgery, patients often experience less pain, a shorter recovery, and less scarring with laparoscopic surgery.
